Avoidable Mistake #1
Background
Computer systems are admittedly complex and delicate. This is especially true for application ecosystems and technology architectures that have evolved over a long period of time. Just when you thought cloud migration would simplify your life - it didn’t. Now you have a new area of concern - digital sovereignty - and adjusting takes careful consideration and planning.
Mistake #1 - Once Size Fits All Fits Nobody
You’ve engaged in conversations with your trusted system integrator and they have a solution for you. Is this the right direction to take? Are you really ready to outsource this? Your interests are not necessarily aligned with your system integrator. It is tempting, and wishful thinking, to look at this challenge as a lift and shift. This is NOT a lift and shift. If you try and big bang this change, you are likely going to wish that you hadn’t. An organization-specific strategy must be developed and risk assessed. Sure, you need reliable vendor partners to be successful. Creating your own migration strategy that can be internally understood and communicated and that can be carefully rolled out is essential. Look at this as an opportunity to simplify. Your application environment is unnecessarily bloated with lots of code you don’t use and you don’t need. Further, to the extent your firm has married onto SaaS platforms, your business processes are more likely dictated by the software rather than what is streamlined and efficient for your business. Now is the time to fix this and generate value.
